North West Norfolk Sailing Week Gets Off to a Flying Start...
The first leg of the North West Norfolk Sailing Association Week (NWNSA) 2006 was hosted by the Club on Saturday and Sunday.
Although Saturday’s first event was raced in light winds, after a continuation of light winds in the second race the weather had a real surprise in store. A mini tornado and 30-40 minutes of force 6-7 winds. Although this race had to be abandoned, all 82 crews returned safely to shore thanks to the experienced crews and the assistance of the clubs safety boats, beach master, race officers and sail base coordinator.
The RNLI and Coast Guard also provided their much valued professional support and backup.
Both the coastguard and the lifeboat team both commented afterwards...
Martin Miller, duty watch manager for the coastguard, said:
"...............The sailing club was well equipped and organised and they had two safety boats out there."
Hunstanton Lifeboat spokesman Michael Softley said:
......"I think if it hadn't been for a sensible and well-prepared sailing club, it could have been very nasty."
Sunday although not so dramatic, the weather gave the competitors some gentle sailing conditions with both races being completed.
The event now moves onto other venues around the NW Norfolk coast: King Lynn, Brancaster, Burnham Overy, Wells, Blakeney and finally Snettisham Beach on Saturday.
