View Full Version : signage like cleethorpes?

01-04-2007, 08:28 AM
remember this from the last meeting?

"On the subject of signage - it was also suggested that we approach the Borough Council about putting up a sign along the lines of the ones recently put up at Cleethorpes. These are signs produced jointly by the Cleethorpes Kitesurf Club and North East Lincolnshire Council outlining basic kitesurfing rules and codes of conduct. (A copy of the sign can be seen at http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n140/peteclark/DSC_8059-1.jpg). The argument being that again - there'd be plenty room for everyone if we just ALL followed a simple set of guidelines. "

well...

just had a phone call from the council and we just need to let them know what we want on it - so suggestions please as to what we want to keep the same as the cleethorpes one? - what new stuff we might add?

gonna bring this up at the sailing club meeting tomorrow as well...

• must be fully insured
• no teaching of any kind unless a locally authorised instructor
• know your rights of way
• launching/landing between groynes
• respect other riders/beach users, pole dancers, dinghy sailors - don't be a cock
• warning to joe public about it being a kitesurfing area
• no parking outside the sailing club unless you are a fully paid up member
• no arcs - only joking...just one in particular

• warning to joe public about it being a kitesurfing area

Hi,

This woud be a good idea... a polite word about avoid standing downwind / near kitesurfers as I've often been a bit worried by a curious observer watching me launch / land on the beach.

Matt

Thing is, is it an acknowledged kitesurf area though? I know we think it is but I'm not sure the council would go for that. Also, one of the suggestions to combat the bow-vercrowding debate was that we all spread out a bit more.

Maybe a mention of the rocks to the right?
Sandbar warning?
Importance of letting the authorities know if kit lost?
To watch out for that dumbass Macca?

I think we should keep it as short and to the point as possible. It's great that Cleethorpes have lead the way but I think their sign is not very well worded, badly laid out and tries to do too much. We can definately improve on that and if the signage at Brancaster has taught us anything it's that people don't bother to read long wordy signs.

Building on Pilch's list I think the key points to cover are:

1) All kitesurfers should be covered by 3rd party liability insurance.
2) Parking in the Sailing Club car park is for Sailing Club members only.
3) Take care when launching/landing your kite and be aware of those around you. In particular avoid launching between the groynes.
4) Know your rights of way on the water and respect other beach users.
5) No kitesurfing instruction is permitted on this beach unless by an authorised local instructor.
6) To avoid wasted searches please report abandoned equipment to the RNLI (telephone 01485 XXXXXX).

As Macca says, I don't think we can warn the public that this is a designated kitesurf only area. In fact, there is a local action group who objected to Segei's application on exactly these grounds - they didn't want the area exclusively used for kitesurfing. I'm sure the Council would be wary of anything which suggested a kitesurf only zone.

brought this up at the sailing club meeting last night - they're all for it - and suggested 2 signs - one at the top of the ramp and one at the top of the steps.

Keith Twaites (who's one of the RNLI crewmen) suggested having something on there about staying well clear of bathers...

Plus - I was wondering whether we shouldn't be a bit more specific (e.g. mention that when passing another kiter - upwind kiter keeps kite-high - downwind kiter keeps kite-low???)

so maybe...

1) All kitesurfers should be covered by 3rd party liability insurance.
2) Parking in the Sailing Club car park is for Sailing Club members only.
3) Take care when launching/landing your kite and be aware of those around you. In particular avoid launching between the groynes.
4) Know your rights of way on the water e.g. 'starboard' has right of way; when passing another kiter - upwind kiter keeps kite-high / downwind kiter keeps kite-low etc...
5) Please respect other beach users, water users and in particular stay well clear of any bathers / swimmers
5) No kitesurfing instruction is permitted on this beach unless by an authorised local instructor.
6) To avoid wasted searches please report abandoned equipment to the RNLI (telephone 01493 851333).

(he suggested we use the Great Yarmouth RNLI number as that is the main call-centre for this area)

Also we could possibly leave off number 2 considering HSC's plans for dealing with parking issues (see other post)

Once we've decided on the exact wording - I've suggested we put that in front of them at the meeting at the beginning of Feb and then submit to the council...

Sounds good. Great job John - cheers.

Point 4) rights of way....

I think that this would be best illustrated by some sort of simple graphic, don't need to go overboard but not everyone knows or can remember the port/starboard thing.

I had a RYA thing once when I did my powerboat driver's licence (many years ago!) it was just a couple of boat shapes heading towards each other with directional arrows showing their path of travel.......that's what i'm talking about - nice

right well - next sailing club meeting is friday so what do we reckon on the signage?

One at the top of the steps - one at the top of the ramp - both saying this?

KITESURFING GUIDELINES

Kings Lynn Borough Council logo at the bottom - possibly also HSC and HUB logos???

02-01-2007, 12:50 PM
I'll put this to the HSC committee tomorrow then shall I???

do you think at the end we should have 'Members of the HUB kitesurfing club wear a blue ID tag on the rear of their harness - for more info visit www.kitesurfhub.org'

like wot the cleethorpes one does?

02-01-2007, 01:17 PM
yes mate 8)

02-02-2007, 08:56 PM
sailing club are happy for us to put this wording to the council although they suggested the safety stuff go at the top and no.2 about parking go to the bottom.

They also asked who would enforce e.g. 1. and 5. (the second 5 doh!)

Also Keith Thwaites now says if you've lost equipment at sea - you should actually ring 999 and ask for the coastguard - apparently that's the proper route....

02-03-2007, 05:36 PM
yeh good idea, Just one point NO Chavs. They seem to have kept at it over winter.
