View Full Version : Light wind kite for 2007 ??

09-23-2006, 08:39 AM
Relying on loads of advice here:

Thinking ahead to next years low wind kiting days....

Nows a good time I reckon to snap a bargain 06 large kite for next years light wind sessions.

But what size for a 90Kg rider?

So far I've seen Slingshot Machines 17.5's - 20.5's

And Boxer III 19's or 16's etc etc with shift system

Want 8-10 mph wind ridability without disappearing downwind because not powered up enough.

Hit me with opinions and advice........I know there's alot around this forum

Have ya thought about a BIG board ? <surf board> or <Door>
Whats the biggest kite you have atm? and what make of kite exactly?
Remember... the bigger the kite the more it weighs so its still gona be hard to fly in really light winds!
Imo... if you have a big kite... 16m-18m already... buy a skim board as will be alot cheaper and will also get you going in next to nothin
Be fun also!

Yeah big boards are the way for sure...I get going on a gnats fart on a 'salomon noseless' 5ft surfboard and an 11M kite....big kites are expensive, have a much smaller wind range, slow and cumbersome...and if you ditch them you have NO chance of getting them up!

Biggest Kite is 12m Turbo Diesel

Board is a 144 Icon

What additions does anyone reckon?

Also have a 9m Boxer SLE. Its control bar can be used in a std 4 line setup allowing me to use with other kites, though lines are only 20m so not the best for light wind conditions.

Recommendations for kite and board then. Obviously want to get away with buying the least kit.

Ditto to everything said. A big board like a Flydoor, Nobile EXT, surfboard etc. or even a skimboard is your best chance but 8-10mph is no wind at all really.

Having said that, if a 12m TD is your biggest kite then you probably would squeeze some bottom end out of a kite around the 15-18m mark. Don't expect to fly in 8-10mph though, you're still going to need 12-15mph+.

yep - Mattie's salomon noseless is a great buy - no point forking out £800 when you can learn more on a surfboard...ask Dave M and Mattie - they both rip..just need some decent waves.

Forget a big kite. Get a skimboard.

Nobiles are around £269 and you'll have so much fun!!

Check out http://www.nobileboardtour.com/

10mph, 12M kite and you're off styling like there aint no tomorrow

Do it. After all, even if you got going in 10mph with a huge slow kite and big board, how much fun would it be??

Skimboards are the dogs for lightwind, soooo many new skills to show orf

Go big,

Dee

10mph wind

10mph wind
go home 8)

 That is sooooo last season!

10mph now and there's lots to do, push shove-its, ollies, all sorts...

Not that I can do any of this, obviously, but it's the future, and it won't take up stacks of room in the Bongo!

Oh and Stevo, ya, you may need a little more wind than the rest of us to get going eh?

Peace, love, kiteboarding,

Dee

not really Dee...

Why spend a load of money on a kite specific skim, when you can have a real good session on a £25 job? It is a completely different feel and technique after all...you may not like it or get bored with it

Most people tend only to drag them out when there's hardly any wind as a last resort anyway....

hmmmm.......

£25 board sitting around doing nothing v. £268 board sitting around doing nothing

If on the other hand you think the skim thing really is the way forward (I quite enjoy it myself - on my £25 skim that i've been out in conditions ranging from 12k - 35k) then go for your life....

Just my humble opinion......

P.S. never kitesurfed on a stacker......but did try a 1m Nasa wing once...

go fluffy

just to echo mattie's point - the danger with these kites that suggest you can plane in 8-10mph is when you drop them - then you're in for a long swim...

If you're determined to go out in real light winds - probably best bet is something like a flysurfer as they are so light and relaunch so easy...
