FILM CREW – Saturday 18th January – 9am onwards

We have been asked by David Morton, resort manager if the club can host a film crew this coming weekend. They will be filming most of the day and will use the club as a base for preparation of cameras, make up etc.

We have been asked if we will supply refreshments throughout the day and I have agreed to do so. We do however need some assistance. So far Gay Watt, Tim, Will and yours truly will be around but it would greatly help if others could volunteer their services. If you are free and can come along please let me know.

REBUILD UPDATE

Last sunday saw a few of us upstairs deciding on priorities for the winter months. We expect to make a decision this week on a new swipe card entry system (this will act as a membership card also) and the first fire escape. We have sufficient build money left to meet the costs of one fire escape at this stage. This will enable ‘in house’ work to commence as soon as it is in-situ. We will be plasterboarding the ceiling once we have the detailed schematics for the electrical systems in place. We will also be fitting out a bar area and the kitchen.

If any member has the skills to help in these areas then please do make contact with me or a member of the committee asap.

The final snagging details are about to be addressed by the builders and will include changing round the entry doors to the showers to afford more privacy, as well as the entry system referred to above.

FURTHER NATIONAL REQUESTS

I am delighted to say we now have 4 separate dingy / catamaran classes wishing to avail themselves of our services over the next two seasons. This is a direct result of the regenerated clubhouse and bodes well for the future and income generation, which all goes to keeping our membership fees at a reasonable rate. Talking of which, we all have till the end of April to renew membership – but do remember that if you renew before the deadline then you get the existing rate not next years uprating as agreed at AGM last year.

YOUTH WEEK SECTION

Will be detailed very soon. Tim Starling is working closely with Richard Brown, Bob Panrucker of the sea cadets and Robbie Bell of RYA.

DEBRIS IN LAUNCH AREAS

We are all aware of the problems caused by the recent storm / sea surge. David Morton, resort manager is doing his best to ensure the waste bins that are half buried in the sand will be dealt with hopefully this week.

That’s it for now folks

Happy watersports and a prosperous New Year to all

Mick

PHASE 1 PHASE 2 UPDATE

December 4, 2013 No Comments

Good evening to all our members. I guess like me, you have been waiting to see further progress, especially in relation to the incorrectly hung changing room doors and an improved door entry system.

We have now submitted the final snagging info to the builders and are awaiting their response. Here I would like to say thanks to those members who have taken the trouble to email me wiht their observations on issues that need addressing. Very helpful thanks.

We were unable to rehang the changing room doors ourselves as this would have invalidated the builders responsibilities. I can confirm we now have detailed plans available for the fire escapes, and have met with a door entry card system installer this week. Tim will inform the committee of the outcome asap.

Following on from an unfortunate incidence of a lack of privacy in the ladies showers recently, there is now a privacy screen inside the entrance door and David Gumb has ordered shower rails and curtains which should be delivered in the next week. I have been informed by several male colleagues that they do not feel we need to do the same for the male changing rooms, however if we get representations to the contrary, we can do the same.

‘In house’ work on phase two can begin once we have building regs approval for the fire escapes. Hopefully this will be soon. In the meantime Dave Gambell has been busy advising us of the improvements we can make re water supply / control and is busy drawing up the schematics for the electrical system required.

Gay Watt and I will be meeting with Jemma Curtis at the Borough Council in January to put together a joint funding bid to the Big Lottery.

Stuart Moore and I have been planning the 40th Anniversary weeks meeting for the Mirror Miracles next August and we need as many volunteers as possible to sign up cos a weeks activity is a heavy commitment and cannot be done by a few members. We need at least 30 people helping so don’t be shy and let me know your availability asap.

Interestingly, the Chairman of the OK class of sailing dinghy saw Carol Cliftons photo of the club on the website and have also asked if we can accommodate them for their National Championship. Just shows the power of good advertising eh? Should be even better once Phase two is complete.

Tim is busy planning the Youth Fun Week next year and also working toward us having a Youth Sailing Section. He has been on RYA courses looking at ways we can improve our position as a future centre of sailing excellence.

It’s been good to see so many of our kitesurf and windsurf members enjoying the high winds of late. For my part I prefer keeping dry and warm in winter as I get older!!! Though I have been attending auctions seeking and finding Shabby Chic furniture for the first floor once it’s complete.

Finally, we have been asked to host Cllr Richard Bird’s fun run on New Years Day once again. This means we will be providing bacon rolls for anyone who turns up at minimal cost. If you wish to join us about 10am on New Years Day, please let me know so we can cater accordingly.

I hope you can see although it is supposed to be the quiet part of the clubs year, we are still beavering away and will see further improvements very soon.

Regards

Mick

Mirror Miracles Nationals next August 16th to 22nd

October 15, 2013 No Comments

Hi there folks!

This is a very prestigious event, the 40th Anniversary of the Mirror Miracles Association.

We expect between 50 to 60 boats to compete. Children as well as adults. We as a club have committed to supply full support throughout the week. We need definite offers of help for the safety boats x 4, beach masters, various social events etc.

My purpose in sending this missive now is therefore to forewarn members of the event and its impact upon the clubs future vis a vis National events – and to ask whether or not you are able to commit to supporting this event and in what capacity.

We need to be able to plan ahead, SO if you haven’t committed to next years holidays yet, how about booking these dates in your diary and sending me confirmation or otherwise of your ability to assist?

Please, please don’t wait till a week before the event to offer your support WE NEED IT NOW !!!

Many thanks,

Mick Ford

Laser Open Meeting

September 17, 2013 No Comments

Hunts Sailing Club, near St Ives in Cambridgeshire, are holding an annual Laser Open Meeting for standard, radial and 4.7 rigs on Saturday 19th October.

Hunts SC is a family club with about 200 members on a deep gravel pit about half a kilometre square.

They offer keen racing, good food, good beer and plenty of prizes. The details are shown on the poster below.

Hunts SC is near the A14 and not far from the A1, A11 and M11, so driving times might be shorter than people think.

AT HOME

September 10, 2013 No Comments

Hello to all our members and especially to all those new families who have joined in the past two to three months. It’s good to see so many young people joining us and wanting to experience the clubs facilities and the various watersports equipment we currently have.

My main purpose in writing is to invite any members who wish to join us at an AT HOME session on SATURDAY 28th SEPTEMBER between 4pm and 7pm.

This will be an opportunity for those of you who wish to access the first floor. See what it’s like now, its potential in the near future, what needs to be done ‘in house’ and of course to soak up the view!!!

We shall be inviting a few of those local people who have supported the clubs development including our Borough and Town Mayors, together with local councillors and business people.

Since access will be via the loft stairs, do remember to wear suitable clothing and shoes folks!

Do come along for a chat, to support your committee, and of course a view of the first floor.

The bar will be open too!!!

Kind regards,

Mick
